.Mac Service is Temporarily Unavailable

Some time Wednesday the .Mac website went down for maintanence and is still down as of now 10:48 EST. Apple probably did as many updates as they could on a low level and finally had to shut everything down to do that final update. That being said I would assume that the new Mobile Me will be availible some time tonight along with the release of the App Store. Steve Jobs has already said the App Store will be availible on Thursday the 10th, and iTunes 7.7 (App Store compatible) has already been released to the public; see “iTunes 7.7 is here” over at Russ Wittmann. If these two services are released tonight I will be happy guy, like a kid with a new toy.

App Store Will Launch Thursday Night

As read on engadget mobile: Steve Jobs Says the App Store will launch Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Steve goes on to tell the USA Today that 500 plus apps will be available at the launch and about 25% will be free. Nearly (90%) all of the apps on the app store will be for sale for under ten bucks. Steve seems to think this is going to be the “biggest launch” of his career. IBM’s software was credited for making the PC take off. Jobs thinks the app store is going to separate iPhone from all the other smart phones.

Separating the men from the boys by the size of their toys, I always say. I think the app store and the iPhone 2.0 update are the real appealing things about the iphone and touch. The world could live without the 3g or GPS, but no one wants to live without the 3rd party apps.

IconBuffet is an Icon Fanatic’s Best Friend

IconBuffet is a cool icon trading site where members can collect and trade icons. There are new icons sets that are released for free all the time, and each month a member will receive one free set which he can trade among his friends. It takes a little while but over time icon fanatics can collect up to almost 200 free icons.

There are two things to watch for when trading icons. The first is stamps; stamps are earned each time members receive and icon set. In order to send icons to a friend, members must have stamps; run out of stamps and there won’t be any more trading. If a friend spends stamps sending icons to another member and the member declines the icons, then the stamps will be returned. The second thing in consideration is tokens; each month the users tokens will be reset to 10 so they have some money to buy icons: sort of like Monopoly money. The monthly free icon set that gets sent to members will sometimes be free, but sometimes it will require 1,2,5 etc. tokens. If members run out of tokens, they cannot buy any more icons for that month. If their friends send some icons that don’t cost tokens, then users will be able to get them other than that, members will have to wait till the next month.

IconBuffet is not just for free icons but also for commercial/professional ones ranging from around $30 to $300. Icons are available in vectors and are sold as starters or full sets. Sets can be browsed in the icon library by category, style, and family.

VIP memberships are also available for about $6 a month and will benefit the member with 30 tokens per month instead of 10, $25 off any starter or full icon set, and occasional VIP surprises. With a VIP membership, starter icon sets are just 5 bucks! If a member buys three icon sets for $15 ($75 in savings), then he has paid off his first year’s VIP cost.

Persuasive Nudge by Russ Wittmann

After all this time I have finally decided to start a blog. I had a little persuasive nudge from my colleague and good friend Russ Wittmann From over there at Wittmann Web Weaving. There will be more to come at Joel Carlton , but right now I am making sure I have WordPress set up just how I need it with the right look and feel.
